Annexion (oil on canvas, 105 x 140 cm) combines political symbolism with poetic condensation. The sunflower, Ukraine's national flower, stands brightly and steadfastly in the center, while chamomile—the symbol of Russia—entwines and engulfs it. It is an image of resistance and threat at the same time, a parable for the loss of freedom and identity.
The scattered words “A view into the distance,” “Closeness that urges,” and “Silence across borders” broaden the view beyond the immediate symbolism: they speak of longing and distance, of oppressive closeness and of a silence that transcends borders. Thus, the work becomes a multi-layered reflection on power, powerlessness, and the fragile relationship between nations and people.
